Evaṁ me sutaṁ—

So I have heard.

ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati pubbārāme migāramātupāsāde sambahulehi abhiññātehi abhiññātehi therehi sāvakehi saddhiṁ—

At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in the Eastern Monastery, the stilt longhouse of Migāra’s mother, together with several well-known senior disciples, such as

有一次,世尊住在舍衛城東園鹿母講堂,與眾多有名的上座弟子在一起:

āyasmatā ca sāriputtena āyasmatā ca mahāmoggallānena āyasmatā ca mahākassapena āyasmatā ca mahākaccāyanena āyasmatā ca mahākoṭṭhikena āyasmatā ca mahākappinena āyasmatā ca mahācundena āyasmatā ca anuruddhena āyasmatā ca revatena āyasmatā ca ānandena, aññehi ca abhiññātehi abhiññātehi therehi sāvakehi saddhiṁ.

the venerables Sāriputta, Mahāmoggallāna, Mahākassapa, Mahākaccāna, Mahākoṭṭhita, Mahākappina, Mahācunda, Anuruddha, Revata, Ānanda, and others.

尊者舍利弗、尊者大目犍連、尊者大迦葉、尊者大迦旃延、尊者大拘絺羅、尊者大劫賓那、尊者大純陀、尊者阿那律、尊者離婆多、尊者阿難,以及其他有名的上座弟子在一起。

跟舍利弗尊者、大目犍連尊者、大迦葉尊者、大迦旃延尊者、大拘絺羅尊者、大劫賓那尊者、大純陀尊者、阿那律陀尊者、離婆多尊者、阿難尊者及其他一些著名的長老比丘住在一起。


Tena kho pana samayena therā bhikkhū nave bhikkhū ovadanti anusāsanti.

Now at that time the senior mendicants were advising and instructing the junior mendicants.

當時,上座比丘們教誡、訓誡新比丘們:

這時候,長老比丘在教導新比丘:


Appekacce therā bhikkhū dasapi bhikkhū ovadanti anusāsanti, appekacce therā bhikkhū vīsampi bhikkhū ovadanti anusāsanti, appekacce therā bhikkhū tiṁsampi bhikkhū ovadanti anusāsanti, appekacce therā bhikkhū cattārīsampi bhikkhū ovadanti anusāsanti.

Some senior mendicants instructed ten mendicants, while some instructed twenty, thirty, or forty.

一些上座比丘們教誡、訓誡十位比丘,一些上座比丘們教誡、訓誡二十位比丘,一些上座比丘們教誡、訓誡三十位比丘,一些上座比丘們教誡、訓誡四十位比丘,

有些長老比丘教導十位新比丘,有些長老比丘教導二十位新比丘,有些長老比丘教導三十位新比丘,有些長老比丘教導四十位新比丘。


Te ca navā bhikkhū therehi bhikkhūhi ovadiyamānā anusāsiyamānā uḷāraṁ pubbenāparaṁ visesaṁ jānanti.

Being instructed by the senior mendicants, the junior mendicants realized a higher distinction than they had before.

那些被上座比丘教誡、訓誡著的新比丘們,次第知更卓越的特質。

新比丘在長老比丘的教導和教誡下,日漸得到進步。


Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā tadahuposathe pannarase pavāraṇāya puṇṇāya puṇṇamāya rattiyā bhikkhusaṅghaparivuto abbhokāse nisinno hoti.

Now, at that time it was the sabbath—the full moon on the fifteenth day—and the Buddha was sitting surrounded by a Saṅgha of monks for the invitation to admonish.

當時,在十五布薩自恣日的滿月夜晚,世尊被比丘僧團圍繞著,在露天處坐。

這時候,在十五布薩日月圓之夜的自恣日之中,比丘僧團圍繞著世尊,坐在空曠的地方。


Atha kho bhagavā tuṇhībhūtaṁ tuṇhībhūtaṁ bhikkhusaṅghaṁ anuviloketvā bhikkhū āmantesi:

Then the Buddha looked around the Saṅgha of mendicants, who were so very silent. He addressed them:

那時,世尊觀察變得沈默的比丘僧團後,召喚比丘們:

世尊觀察寧靜的比丘僧團後,對比丘說:


“āraddhosmi, bhikkhave, imāya paṭipadāya;

“I am satisfied, mendicants, with this practice.

「比丘們!我滿意此道跡,

「比丘們,我對你們的修習感到歡欣,


āraddhacittosmi, bhikkhave, imāya paṭipadāya.

My heart is satisfied with this practice.

我的心滿意此道跡。

我對你們的修習感到滿意。


Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, bhiyyoso mattāya vīriyaṁ ārabhatha appattassa pattiyā, anadhigatassa adhigamāya, asacchikatassa sacchikiriyāya.

So you should rouse up even more energy for attaining the unattained, achieving the unachieved, and realizing the unrealized.

比丘們!因此,在這裡,為了未得的得,為了未達到的達到,為了未作證的作證,你們要發動更多活力,

比丘們,你們要更加精進,取得那還沒有取得的,達到那還沒有達到的,證悟那還沒有證悟的。


Idhevāhaṁ sāvatthiyaṁ komudiṁ cātumāsiniṁ āgamessāmī”ti.

I will wait here in Sāvatthī for the Komudī full moon of the fourth month.”

我將在舍衛城這裡等待到第四個月的迦刺底迦月滿月日。」

我會逗留在舍衛城至雨季第四個月白蓮盛開的月份。」


Assosuṁ kho jānapadā bhikkhū: “bhagavā kira tattheva sāvatthiyaṁ komudiṁ cātumāsiniṁ āgamessatī”ti.

Mendicants from around the country heard about this,

住在鄉下的比丘們聽聞:「聽說世尊將在舍衛城那裡等待到第四個月的迦刺底迦月滿月日。」

在市外的比丘聽到世尊逗留在舍衛城的消息,


Te jānapadā bhikkhū sāvatthiṁ osaranti bhagavantaṁ dassanāya.

and came down to Sāvatthī to see the Buddha.

為了見世尊,那些住在鄉下的比丘們進入舍衛城,

便前往探望世尊。


Te ca kho therā bhikkhū bhiyyoso mattāya nave bhikkhū ovadanti anusāsanti.

And those senior mendicants instructed the junior mendicants even more.

而那些上座比丘則教誡、訓誡更多的新比丘:

那些長老比丘加緊教導新比丘:


Appekacce therā bhikkhū dasapi bhikkhū ovadanti anusāsanti, appekacce therā bhikkhū vīsampi bhikkhū ovadanti anusāsanti, appekacce therā bhikkhū tiṁsampi bhikkhū ovadanti anusāsanti, appekacce therā bhikkhū cattārīsampi bhikkhū ovadanti anusāsanti.

Now, at that time it was the sabbath—the Komudī full moon on the fifteenth day of the fourth month—and the Buddha was sitting in the open surrounded by a Saṅgha of monks.

當時,在第四個月的迦刺底迦月滿月日,十五布薩日的滿月夜晚,世尊被比丘僧團圍繞著,在露天處坐。

這時候,在雨季第四個月白蓮盛開的月份之中,十五布薩日月圓之夜,比丘僧團圍繞著世尊,坐在空曠的地方。


Atha kho bhagavā tuṇhībhūtaṁ tuṇhībhūtaṁ bhikkhusaṅghaṁ anuviloketvā bhikkhū āmantesi:

Then the Buddha looked around the Saṅgha of mendicants, who were so very silent. He addressed them:

那時,世尊觀察變得沈默的比丘僧團後,召喚比丘們:

世尊觀察寧靜的比丘僧團後,對比丘說:


“Apalāpāyaṁ, bhikkhave, parisā; nippalāpāyaṁ, bhikkhave, parisā; suddhā sāre patiṭṭhitā.

“This assembly has no chaff, mendicants, it is free of chaff, pure, and consolidated in the core.

「比丘們!此眾無閒聊,比丘們!此眾離閒聊,純住立於核心。

「比丘們,這個大眾沒有閒言、沒有雜語,這個大眾純淨、取得心髓。


Tathārūpo ayaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhusaṅgho; tathārūpā ayaṁ, bhikkhave, parisā

Such is this Saṅgha of mendicants, such is this assembly!

比丘們!此比丘僧團是像這樣的;比丘們!此眾是像這樣的:

比丘們,這樣的比丘僧團、這樣的大眾⋯⋯


yathārūpā parisā āhuneyyā pāhuneyyā dakkhiṇeyyā añjalikaraṇīyā anuttaraṁ puññakkhettaṁ lokassa.

An assembly such as this is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.

如此之眾應該被奉獻、應該被供奉、應該被供養、應該被合掌,為世間的無上福田。

值得受人供養,值得受人合掌,是世間無上的福田。


Tathārūpo ayaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhusaṅgho; tathārūpā ayaṁ, bhikkhave, parisā

Such is this Saṅgha of mendicants, such is this assembly!

比丘們!此比丘僧團是像這樣的;比丘們!此眾是像這樣的:

比丘們,對這樣的比丘僧團、這樣的大眾⋯⋯


yathārūpāya parisāya appaṁ dinnaṁ bahu hoti, bahu dinnaṁ bahutaraṁ.

For an assembly such as this, giving little becomes much, while giving much becomes even more.

對如此之眾少的施與即成為多;多的施與即成為更多。

作小布施能得大福報,作大布施能得更大的福報。


Tathārūpo ayaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhusaṅgho; tathārūpā ayaṁ, bhikkhave, parisā

Such is this Saṅgha of mendicants, such is this assembly!

比丘們!此比丘僧團是像這樣的;比丘們!此眾是像這樣的:

比丘們,這樣的比丘僧團、這樣的大眾⋯⋯


yathārūpā parisā dullabhā dassanāya lokassa.

An assembly such as this is rarely seen in the world.

如此之眾是世間難得一見的。

在世間難得一見。


Tathārūpo ayaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhusaṅgho; tathārūpā ayaṁ, bhikkhave, parisā

Such is this Saṅgha of mendicants, such is this assembly!

比丘們!此比丘僧團是像這樣的;比丘們!此眾是像這樣的:

比丘們,這樣的比丘僧團、這樣的大眾⋯⋯


yathārūpaṁ parisaṁ alaṁ yojanagaṇanāni dassanāya gantuṁ puṭosenāpi.

An assembly such as this is worth traveling many leagues to see, even if you have to carry your own provisions in a shoulder bag.

足以令人為了見如此之眾,自己背著背包走上幾由旬。

值得人們肩負資糧走許多由旬的路程前來探望。


Santi, bhikkhave, bhikkhū imasmiṁ bhikkhusaṅghe arahanto khīṇāsavā vusitavanto katakaraṇīyā ohitabhārā anuppattasadatthā parikkhīṇabhavasaṁyojanā sammadaññāvimuttā—

For in this Saṅgha there are perfected mendicants, who have ended the defilements, completed the spiritual journey, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, achieved their own goal, utterly ended the fetters of rebirth, and are rightly freed through enlightenment.

比丘們!在此比丘僧團中,有煩惱已盡、修行已成、應該作的已作、負擔已卸、自己的利益已達成、有之結已被滅盡、以究竟智解脫的阿羅漢比丘,

「比丘們,在這樣的比丘僧團、這樣的大眾之中,有些是盡除了所有漏、過 著清淨的生活、完成了應做的修行工作、放下了重擔、取得了最高的果證、解除 了導致投生的結縛、以圓滿的智慧而得解脫的阿羅漢比丘;


evarūpāpi, bhikkhave, santi bhikkhū imasmiṁ bhikkhusaṅghe.

There are such mendicants in this Saṅgha.

比丘們!在此比丘僧團中,有這樣的比丘。

Santi, bhikkhave, bhikkhū imasmiṁ bhikkhusaṅghe pañcannaṁ orambhāgiyānaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ parikkhayā opapātikā tattha parinibbāyino anāvattidhammā tasmā lokā—

In this Saṅgha there are mendicants who, with the ending of the five lower fetters are reborn spontaneously. They are extinguished there, and are not liable to return from that world.

比丘們!在此比丘僧團中,有以五下分結的滅盡而為化生者,在那裡入了究竟涅槃,不從彼世轉回的比丘,

有些是斷除五下分結、在上界化生、在那裏入滅、不會從那世間回來的比丘;


evarūpāpi, bhikkhave, santi bhikkhū imasmiṁ bhikkhusaṅghe.

There are such mendicants in this Saṅgha.

比丘們!在此比丘僧團中,有這樣的比丘。

Santi, bhikkhave, bhikkhū imasmiṁ bhikkhusaṅghe tiṇṇaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ parikkhayā rāgadosamohānaṁ tanuttā sakadāgāmino sakideva imaṁ lokaṁ āgantvā dukkhassantaṁ karissanti—

In this Saṅgha there are mendicants who, with the ending of three fetters, and the weakening of greed, hate, and delusion, are once-returners. They come back to this world once only, then make an end of suffering.

比丘們!在此比丘僧團中,有以三結的滅盡,以貪、瞋、癡薄,為一來者,只來此世一回後,將得到苦的結束之比丘,

有些是斷除三結,貪欲、瞋恚、愚癡薄,成為斯陀含,返回這個世間一次之後苦便會終結的比丘;


evarūpāpi, bhikkhave, santi bhikkhū imasmiṁ bhikkhusaṅghe.

There are such mendicants in this Saṅgha.

比丘們!在此比丘僧團中,有這樣的比丘。

Santi, bhikkhave, bhikkhū imasmiṁ bhikkhusaṅghe tiṇṇaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ parikkhayā sotāpannā avinipātadhammā niyatā sambodhiparāyanā—

In this Saṅgha there are mendicants who, with the ending of three fetters are stream-enterers, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, bound for awakening.

比丘們!在此比丘僧團中,有以三結的滅盡,為入流者,不墮惡趣法、決定、以正覺為彼岸的比丘,

有些是 斷除三結、成為須陀洹、不會墮落惡道、肯定會得到覺悟的比丘。


evarūpāpi, bhikkhave, santi bhikkhū imasmiṁ bhikkhusaṅghe.

There are such mendicants in this Saṅgha.

比丘們!在此比丘僧團中,有這樣的比丘。

Santi, bhikkhave, bhikkhū imasmiṁ bhikkhusaṅghe catunnaṁ satipaṭṭhānānaṁ bhāvanānuyogamanuyuttā viharanti—

In this Saṅgha there are mendicants who are committed to developing the four kinds of mindfulness meditation ...

比丘們!在此比丘僧團中,有住於致力四念住修習實踐的比丘,

「比丘們,在這個僧團之中,有些比丘持續修習四念處,


evarūpāpi, bhikkhave, santi bhikkhū imasmiṁ bhikkhusaṅghe.

比丘們!在此比丘僧團中,有這樣的比丘。

the five powers ...

有些比丘持續修習五力,


sattannaṁ bojjhaṅgānaṁ ...

the seven awakening factors ...

七覺支⋯⋯

有些比丘持續修習七覺支,


ariyassa aṭṭhaṅgikassa maggassa bhāvanānuyogamanuyuttā viharanti—

the noble eightfold path.

住於致力八支聖道修習實踐的比丘,

有些比丘持續修習八正道。


evarūpāpi, bhikkhave, santi bhikkhū imasmiṁ bhikkhusaṅghe.

There are such mendicants in this Saṅgha.

比丘們!在此比丘僧團中,有這樣的比丘。

「比丘們,在這個僧團之中,有些比丘持續修習慈心,


karuṇābhāvanānuyogamanuyuttā viharanti ...

compassion ...

住於致力悲修習實踐⋯⋯

有些比丘持續修習悲心,


muditābhāvanānuyogamanuyuttā viharanti ...

rejoicing ...

住於致力喜悅修習實踐⋯⋯

有些比丘持續修習喜心,


upekkhābhāvanānuyogamanuyuttā viharanti ...

equanimity ...

住於致力平靜修習實踐⋯⋯

有些比丘持續修習捨心,


asubhabhāvanānuyogamanuyuttā viharanti ...

ugliness ...

住於致力不淨修習實踐⋯⋯

有些比丘持續修習不淨,


aniccasaññābhāvanānuyogamanuyuttā viharanti—

impermanence.

住於致力無常想修習實踐的比丘,

有些比丘持續修習無常想,


evarūpāpi, bhikkhave, santi bhikkhū imasmiṁ bhikkhusaṅghe.

There are such mendicants in this Saṅgha.

比丘們!在此比丘僧團中,有這樣的比丘。

有些比丘持續修習出入息念。


Santi, bhikkhave, bhikkhū imasmiṁ bhikkhusaṅghe ānāpānassatibhāvanānuyogamanuyuttā viharanti.

In this Saṅgha there are mendicants who are committed to developing the meditation on mindfulness of breathing.

比丘們!在此比丘僧團中,有住於致力入出息念修習實踐的比丘,

⋯⋯


Ānāpānassati, bhikkhave, bhāvitā bahulīkatā mahapphalā hoti mahānisaṁsā.

Mendicants, when mindfulness of breathing is developed and cultivated it is very fruitful and beneficial.

比丘們!當入出息念已修習、已多修習時,有大果、大效益,

「比丘們,勤修出入息念,能帶來大果報、大利益。


Ānāpānassati, bhikkhave, bhāvitā bahulīkatā cattāro satipaṭṭhāne paripūreti.

Mindfulness of breathing, when developed and cultivated, fulfills the four kinds of mindfulness meditation.

比丘們!當入出息念已修習、已多修習時,使四念住完成;

比丘們,勤修出入息念能使四念處得到圓滿,


Cattāro satipaṭṭhānā bhāvitā bahulīkatā satta bojjhaṅge paripūrenti.

The four kinds of mindfulness meditation, when developed and cultivated, fulfill the seven awakening factors.

當四念住已修習、已多修習時,使七覺支完成;

勤修四念處能使七覺支得到圓滿,


Satta bojjhaṅgā bhāvitā bahulīkatā vijjāvimuttiṁ paripūrenti.

And the seven awakening factors, when developed and cultivated, fulfill knowledge and freedom.

當七覺支已修習、已多修習時,使明與解脫完成。

勤修七覺支能使明和解脫得到圓滿。


Kathaṁ bhāvitā ca, bhikkhave, ānāpānassati kathaṁ bahulīkatā mahapphalā hoti mahānisaṁsā?

And how is mindfulness of breathing developed and cultivated to be very fruitful and beneficial?

而,比丘們!當入出息念如何已修習、如何已多修習時,有大果、大效益呢?

「比丘們,怎樣修習出入息念呢?什麼是勤修呢?什麼是大果報、大利益呢?


Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu araññagato vā rukkhamūlagato vā suññāgāragato vā nisīdati pallaṅkaṁ ābhujitvā ujuṁ kāyaṁ paṇidhāya parimukhaṁ satiṁ upaṭṭhapetvā.

It’s when a mendicant—gone to a wilderness, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut—sits down cross-legged, sets their body straight, and establishes mindfulness in front of them.

比丘們!這裡,比丘到林野,或到樹下,或到空屋,坐下,盤腿後,挺直身體,建立起面前的正念後,

「比丘們,一位比丘到森林、樹下或靜室盤腿坐下來,豎直腰身,把念保持安放在要繫念的地方,


So satova assasati satova passasati.

Just mindful, they breathe in. Mindful, they breathe out.

他只正念地吸氣、只正念地呼氣:

他只是念及呼氣和吸氣。


Dīghaṁ vā assasanto ‘dīghaṁ assasāmī’ti pajānāti, dīghaṁ vā passasanto ‘dīghaṁ passasāmī’ti pajānāti;

Breathing in heavily they know: ‘I’m breathing in heavily.’ Breathing out heavily they know: ‘I’m breathing out heavily.’

當吸氣長時,他了知:『我吸氣長。』或當呼氣長時,他了知:『我呼氣長。』

「當呼氣長的時候,他知道自己呼氣長;當吸氣長的時候,他知道自己吸氣長。


rassaṁ vā assasanto ‘rassaṁ assasāmī’ti pajānāti, rassaṁ vā passasanto ‘rassaṁ passasāmī’ti pajānāti;

When breathing in lightly they know: ‘I’m breathing in lightly.’ Breathing out lightly they know: ‘I’m breathing out lightly.’

當吸氣短時,他了知:『我吸氣短。』或當呼氣短時,他了知:『我呼氣短。』

當呼氣短的時候,他知道自己呼氣短;當吸氣短的時候,他知道自己吸氣短。


‘sabbakāyapaṭisaṁvedī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘sabbakāyapaṭisaṁvedī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati;

They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe in experiencing the whole body.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out experiencing the whole body.’

他學習:『感受著一切身,我將吸氣。』他學習:『感受著一切身,我將呼氣。』

「他這樣修學:『我要在呼氣的時候,體會整個身體;我要在吸氣的時候,體會整個身體。


‘passambhayaṁ kāyasaṅkhāraṁ assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘passambhayaṁ kāyasaṅkhāraṁ passasissāmī’ti sikkhati.

They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe in stilling the physical process.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out stilling the physical process.’

他學習:『使身行寧靜著著,我將吸氣。』他學習:『使身行寧靜著,我將呼氣。』

我要在呼氣的時候,平息身行;我要在吸氣的時候,平息身行。

They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe in freeing the mind.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out freeing the mind.’

‘Aniccānupassī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘aniccānupassī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati;

They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe in observing impermanence.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out observing impermanence.’

他學習:『隨觀無常,我將吸氣。』他學習:『隨觀無常,我將呼氣。』

‘virāgānupassī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘virāgānupassī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati;

They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe in observing fading away.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out observing fading away.’

他學習:『隨觀離貪,我將吸氣。』他學習:『隨觀離貪,我將呼氣。』

‘nirodhānupassī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘nirodhānupassī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati;

They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe in observing cessation.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out observing cessation.’

‘paṭinissaggānupassī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘paṭinissaggānupassī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati.

They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe in observing letting go.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out observing letting go.’

他學習:『隨觀斷念,我將吸氣。』他學習:『隨觀斷念,我將呼氣。』

我要在呼氣的時候,體察放捨;我要在吸氣的時候,體察放捨。』


Evaṁ bhāvitā kho, bhikkhave, ānāpānassati evaṁ bahulīkatā mahapphalā hoti mahānisaṁsā.

Mindfulness of breathing, when developed and cultivated in this way, is very fruitful and beneficial.

比丘們!當入出息念這麼已修習、這麼已多修習時,有大果、大效益。

「比丘們,這就是修習出入息念了。勤修這出入息念,能帶來大果報、大利益。


Kathaṁ bhāvitā ca, bhikkhave, ānāpānassati kathaṁ bahulīkatā cattāro satipaṭṭhāne paripūreti?

And how is mindfulness of breathing developed and cultivated so as to fulfill the four kinds of mindfulness meditation?

而,比丘們!當入出息念如何已修習、如何已多修習時,使四念住完成呢?

「比丘們,怎樣修習出入息念呢?為什麼勤修出入息念會使四念處得到圓滿呢?


Yasmiṁ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhu dīghaṁ vā assasanto ‘dīghaṁ assasāmī’ti pajānāti, dīghaṁ vā passasanto ‘dīghaṁ passasāmī’ti pajānāti;

Whenever a mendicant knows that they breathe heavily,

比丘們!比丘每當吸氣長時,他了知:『我吸氣長。』或當呼氣長時,他了知:『我呼氣長』、

「比丘們,一位比丘當呼氣長的時候,他知道自己呼氣長;當吸氣長的時候, 他知道自己吸氣長。


rassaṁ vā assasanto ‘rassaṁ assasāmī’ti pajānāti, rassaṁ vā passasanto ‘rassaṁ passasāmī’ti pajānāti;

or lightly,

當吸氣短時,他了知:『我吸氣短。』或當呼氣短時,他了知:『我呼氣短。』、

當呼氣短的時候,他知道自己呼氣短;當吸氣短的時候,他 知道自己吸氣短。


‘sabbakāyapaṭisaṁvedī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘sabbakāyapaṭisaṁvedī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati;

or experiencing the whole body,

他學習:『感受著一切身,我將吸氣。』他學習:『感受著一切身,我將呼氣。』

or stilling physical processes—

kāye kāyānupassī, bhikkhave, tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhu viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ.

at that time they’re meditating by observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

比丘們!那時,比丘住於在身上隨觀身,熱心、正知、有念,能調伏對於世間的貪與憂,

「比丘們,這時候,這位比丘亦是在如實觀察身,勤奮、有覺知、有念,以此 來清除世上的貪著和苦惱。


Kāyesu kāyaññatarāhaṁ, bhikkhave, evaṁ vadāmi yadidaṁ—assāsapassāsā.

For I say that the in-breaths and out-breaths are an aspect of the body.

比丘們!我說這樣是在身上之身的一種,即:吸氣與呼氣。

比丘們,我說,出入息是身體的其中一種活動。


Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, kāye kāyānupassī tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhu viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ.

That’s why at that time a mendicant is meditating by observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

因此,比丘們!在這裡,那時,比丘住於在身上隨觀身,熱心、正知、有念,能調伏對於世間的貪與憂。

因此,這時候,這位比丘亦是在如實觀察身,勤奮、有覺知、有念,以此來清除世上的貪著和苦惱。

比丘們!那時,比丘住於在受上隨觀受,熱心、正知、有念,能調伏對於世間的貪與憂,

「比丘們,這時候,這位比丘亦是在如實觀察受,勤奮、有覺知、有念,以此 來清除世上的貪著和苦惱。


Vedanāsu vedanāññatarāhaṁ, bhikkhave, evaṁ vadāmi yadidaṁ—assāsapassāsānaṁ sādhukaṁ manasikāraṁ.

For I say that careful application of mind to the in-breaths and out-breaths is an aspect of feelings.

比丘們!我說這樣是在受上之受的一種,即:吸氣與呼氣的好好作意。

比丘們,我說,很好地在出入息之中作意是感受的其中一種活動。


Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, vedanāsu vedanānupassī tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhu viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ.

That’s why at that time a mendicant is meditating by observing an aspect of feelings—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

因此,比丘們!在這裡,那時,比丘住於在受上隨觀受,熱心、正知、有念,能調伏對於世間的貪與憂。

因此,這時候,這位比丘亦是在如實觀察受,勤奮、有覺知、有念,以此來清除世上的貪著和苦惱。

Whenever a mendicant practices breathing while experiencing the mind,

or gladdening the mind,

他學習:『使心喜悅著,我將吸氣。』他學習:『使心喜悅著,我將呼氣。』、

‘samādahaṁ cittaṁ assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘samādahaṁ cittaṁ passasissāmī’ti sikkhati;

or immersing the mind in samādhi,

or freeing the mind—

citte cittānupassī, bhikkhave, tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhu viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ.

at that time they meditate observing an aspect of the mind—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

比丘們!那時,比丘住於在心上隨觀心,熱心、正知、有念,能調伏對於世間的貪與憂,

「比丘們,這時候,這位比丘亦是在如實觀察心,勤奮、有覺知、有念,以此來清除世上的貪著和苦惱。


Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, muṭṭhassatissa asampajānassa ānāpānassatiṁ vadāmi.

There is no development of mindfulness of breathing for someone who is unmindful and lacks awareness, I say.

比丘們!我說念已忘失、不正知者無入出息念。

比丘們,我說,修習出入息念的人是不會失念和不會沒有覺知的。


Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, citte cittānupassī tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhu viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ.

That’s why at that time a mendicant is meditating by observing an aspect of the mind—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

因此,比丘們!在這裡,那時,比丘住於在心上隨觀心,熱心、正知、有念,能調伏對於世間的貪與憂。

因此,這時候,這位比丘亦是在如實觀察心,勤奮、有覺知、有念,以此來清除世上的貪著和苦惱。


Yasmiṁ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhu ‘aniccānupassī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘aniccānupassī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati;

Whenever a mendicant practices breathing while observing impermanence,

比丘們!比丘每當他學習:『隨觀無常,我將吸氣。』他學習:『隨觀無常,我將呼氣。』、

「比丘們,一位比丘這樣修學: ‘我要在呼氣的時候,體察無常;我要在吸氣 的時候,體察無常。

or observing fading away,

at that time they meditate observing an aspect of principles—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

比丘們!那時,比丘住於在法上隨觀法,熱心、正知、有念,能調伏對於世間的貪與憂,

「比丘們,這時候,這位比丘亦是在如實觀察法,勤奮、有覺知、有念,以此 來清除世上的貪著和苦惱。


So yaṁ taṁ abhijjhādomanassānaṁ pahānaṁ taṁ paññāya disvā sādhukaṁ ajjhupekkhitā hoti.

Having seen with wisdom the giving up of covetousness and displeasure, they watch over closely with equanimity.

凡以慧見了貪與憂的捨斷者,他是善旁觀者。

他以智慧看見斷除各種貪著和苦惱,有一份高度的捨心。


Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, dhammesu dhammānupassī tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhu viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ.

That’s why at that time a mendicant is meditating by observing an aspect of principles—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

因此,比丘們!在這裡,那時,比丘住於在法上隨觀法,熱心、正知、有念,能調伏對於世間的貪與憂。

因此,這時候,這位比丘亦是在如實觀察法,勤奮、有覺知、有念,以此來清除世上的貪著和苦惱。


Evaṁ bhāvitā kho, bhikkhave, ānāpānassati evaṁ bahulīkatā cattāro satipaṭṭhāne paripūreti.

That’s how mindfulness of breathing, when developed and cultivated, fulfills the four kinds of mindfulness meditation.

比丘們!當入出息念這麼已修習、這麼已多修習時,使四念住完成。

「比丘們,這就是修習出入息念了。勤修這出入息念,會使四念處得到圓滿。


Kathaṁ bhāvitā ca, bhikkhave, cattāro satipaṭṭhānā kathaṁ bahulīkatā satta bojjhaṅge paripūrenti?

And how are the four kinds of mindfulness meditation developed and cultivated so as to fulfill the seven awakening factors?

而,比丘們!當四念住如何已修習、如何已多修習時,使七覺支完成呢?

「比丘們,怎樣修習四念處呢?為什麼勤修四念處會使七覺支得到圓滿呢?


Yasmiṁ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ, upaṭṭhitāssa tasmiṁ samaye sati hoti asammuṭṭhā.

Whenever a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of the body, at that time their mindfulness is established and lucid.

比丘們!比丘每當他住於在身上看到身,熱心、正知、有念,能調伏對於世間的貪與憂時,那時,比丘之念已現前而不忘失。

「比丘們,當一位比丘保持念來如實觀察身,勤奮、有覺知、有念,以此來清除世上的貪著和苦惱的時候,他是保持念和沒有忘失的;


Yasmiṁ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno upaṭṭhitā sati hoti asammuṭṭhā, satisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti. Satisambojjhaṅgaṁ tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, satisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchati.

At such a time, a mendicant has activated the awakening factor of mindfulness; they develop it and perfect it.

比丘們!每當比丘之念已現前而不忘失時,那時,比丘的念覺支已被發動,那時,比丘修習念覺支,那時,比丘的念覺支到達圓滿的修習。

當他保持念和沒有忘失的時候,這位比丘就是在著手修習念覺支。當修習念覺支的時候,念覺支便會逐漸修習圓滿。


So tathāsato viharanto taṁ dhammaṁ paññāya pavicinati pavicayati parivīmaṁsaṁ āpajjati.

As they live mindfully in this way they investigate, explore, and inquire into that principle with wisdom.

當住於像這樣的念時,他對那法以慧考察、伺察、到達審慮。

他安住在念之中,因此能以智慧思量、觀察、深觀法義。


Yasmiṁ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhu tathāsato viharanto taṁ dhammaṁ paññāya pavicinati pavicayati parivīmaṁsaṁ āpajjati, dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgo tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgaṁ tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgo tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchati.

At such a time, a mendicant has activated the awakening factor of investigation of principles; they develop it and perfect it.

比丘們!每當比丘住於像這樣的念,他對那法以慧考察、伺察、到達審慮時,那時,比丘的擇法覺支已被發動,那時,比丘修習擇法覺支,那時,比丘的擇法覺支到達圓滿的修習。

「比丘們,當一位比丘安住在念之中,以智慧思量、觀察、深觀法義的時候,這位比丘就是在著手修習擇法覺支。


Tassa taṁ dhammaṁ paññāya pavicinato pavicayato parivīmaṁsaṁ āpajjato āraddhaṁ hoti vīriyaṁ asallīnaṁ.

As they investigate principles with wisdom in this way their energy is roused up and unflagging.

當他對那法以慧考察、伺察、到達審慮時,活力已被激發而不退。

當修習擇法覺支的時候,擇法覺支便會逐漸修習圓滿。當以智慧思量、觀察、深觀法義的時候,便會因此而精進、不怠惰。


Yasmiṁ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno taṁ dhammaṁ paññāya pavicinato pavicayato parivīmaṁsaṁ āpajjato āraddhaṁ hoti vīriyaṁ asallīnaṁ, vīriyasambojjhaṅgo tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, vīriyasambojjhaṅgaṁ tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, vīriyasambojjhaṅgo tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchati.

At such a time, a mendicant has activated the awakening factor of energy; they develop it and perfect it.

比丘們!每當他對那法以慧考察、伺察、到達審慮,比丘的活力已被激發而不退時,那時,比丘的活力覺支已被發動,那時,比丘修習活力覺支,那時,比丘的活力覺支到達圓滿的修習。

「比丘們,當一位比丘以智慧思量、觀察、深觀法義,精進、不怠惰的時候,這位比丘就是在著手修習精進覺支。當修習精進覺支的時候,精進覺支便會逐漸 修習圓滿。當作出精進的時候,心靈上的喜悅便會生起。


Āraddhavīriyassa uppajjati pīti nirāmisā.

When they’re energetic, rapture not of the flesh arises.

當活力已被發動時,精神的喜生起。

「比丘們,當一位比丘作出精進,心靈上的喜悅生起的時候,


Yasmiṁ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno āraddhavīriyassa uppajjati pīti nirāmisā, pītisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, pītisambojjhaṅgaṁ tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, pītisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchati.

At such a time, a mendicant has activated the awakening factor of rapture; they develop it and perfect it.

比丘們!每當活力已被發動比丘之精神的喜生起時,比丘的喜覺支已被發動,那時,比丘修習喜覺支,那時,比丘的喜覺支到達圓滿的修習。

這位比丘就是在著手修習喜覺支。當修習喜覺支的時候,喜覺支便會逐漸修習圓滿。


Pītimanassa kāyopi passambhati, cittampi passambhati.

When the mind is full of rapture, the body and mind become tranquil.

當意喜時,身寧靜,心也寧靜。

當內心有喜悅的時候,身便會猗息下來,心便會猗息下來。


Yasmiṁ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno pītimanassa kāyopi passambhati, cittampi passambhati, passaddhisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, passaddhisambojjhaṅgaṁ tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, passaddhisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchati.

At such a time, a mendicant has activated the awakening factor of tranquility; they develop it and perfect it.

比丘們!每當意喜比丘的身寧靜、心也寧靜時,那時,比丘的寧靜覺支已被發動,那時,比丘修習寧靜覺支,那時,比丘的寧靜覺支到達圓滿的修習。

「比丘們,當一位比丘內心有喜悅,身猗息下來,心猗息下來的時候,這位 比丘就是在著手修習猗覺支。當修習猗覺支的時候,猗覺支便會逐漸修習圓滿。


Passaddhakāyassa sukhino cittaṁ samādhiyati.

When the body is tranquil and they feel bliss, the mind becomes immersed in samādhi.

當身寧靜時,有樂者的心入定。

當身猗息時便會有樂;有樂的人,內心便會定下來。


Yasmiṁ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno passaddhakāyassa sukhino cittaṁ samādhiyati, samādhisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, samādhisambojjhaṅgaṁ tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, samādhisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchati.

At such a time, a mendicant has activated the awakening factor of immersion; they develop it and perfect it.

比丘們!每當身寧靜、有樂比丘的心入定時,比丘的定覺支就已被發動,那時,比丘修習定覺支,那時,比丘的定覺支到達圓滿的修習。

「比丘們,當一位比丘身有由猗息所帶來的樂,心有由樂所帶來的定的時候, 這位比丘就是在著手修習定覺支。當修習定覺支的時候,定覺支便會逐漸修習圓 滿。


So tathāsamāhitaṁ cittaṁ sādhukaṁ ajjhupekkhitā hoti.

They closely watch over that mind immersed in samādhi.

他成為這樣得定的心之善旁觀者。

當內心有定時便會有一份高度的捨心。


Yasmiṁ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhu tathāsamāhitaṁ cittaṁ sādhukaṁ ajjhupekkhitā hoti, upekkhāsambojjhaṅgo tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, upekkhāsambojjhaṅgaṁ tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, upekkhāsambojjhaṅgo tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchati.

At such a time, a mendicant has activated the awakening factor of equanimity; they develop it and perfect it.

比丘們!每當比丘成為這樣得定的心之善旁觀者時,那時,比丘的平靜覺支已被發動,那時,比丘修習平靜覺支,那時,比丘的平靜覺支到達圓滿的修習。

「比丘們,當一位比丘內心有定,有一份高度的捨心的時候,這位比丘就是在著手修習捨覺支。當修習捨覺支的時候,捨覺支便會逐漸修習圓滿。

比丘們!每當比丘之念已現前而不忘失時,那時,比丘的念覺支已被發動,那時,比丘修習念覺支,那時,比丘的念覺支到達圓滿的修習。

當他保持念和沒有忘失的時候,這位比丘就是在著手修習念覺支。當修習念覺支的時候,念覺支便會逐漸修習圓滿。


Yasmiṁ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhu tathāsato viharanto taṁ dhammaṁ paññāya pavicinati pavicayati parivīmaṁsaṁ āpajjati, dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgo tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgaṁ tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgo tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchati. 他安住在念之中,因此能以智慧思量、觀察、深觀法義。「比丘們,當一位比丘安住在念之中,以智慧思量、觀察、深觀法義的時候,這位比丘就是在著手修習擇法覺支。當修習擇法覺支的時候,擇法覺支便會逐漸修習圓滿。


Yasmiṁ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno taṁ dhammaṁ paññāya pavicinato pavicayato parivīmaṁsaṁ āpajjato āraddhaṁ hoti vīriyaṁ asallīnaṁ, vīriyasambojjhaṅgo tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, vīriyasambojjhaṅgaṁ tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, vīriyasambojjhaṅgo tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchati. Āraddhavīriyassa uppajjati pīti nirāmisā.

當他對那法以慧考察、伺察、到達審慮時,活力已被激發而不退。比丘們!每當他對那法以慧考察、伺察、到達審慮,比丘的活力已被激發而不退時,那時,比丘的活力覺支已被發動,那時,比丘修習活力覺支,那時,比丘的活力覺支到達圓滿的修習。

當以智慧思量、觀察、深觀法義的時候,便會因此而精進、不怠惰。「比丘們,當一位比丘以智慧思量、觀察、深觀法義,精進、不怠惰的時候,這位比丘就是在著手修習精進覺支。當修習精進覺支的時候,精進覺支便會逐漸修習圓滿。

當作出精進的時候,心靈上的喜悅便會生起。「比丘們,當一位比丘作出精進,心靈上的喜悅生起的時候,這位比丘就是在著手修習喜覺支。當修習喜覺支的時候,喜覺支便會逐漸修習圓滿。


Yasmiṁ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno pītimanassa kāyopi passambhati, cittampi passambhati, passaddhisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, passaddhisambojjhaṅgaṁ tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, passaddhisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṁ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchati. Passaddhakāyassa sukhino cittaṁ samādhiyati.

當意喜時,身寧靜,心也寧靜。比丘們!每當意喜比丘的身寧靜、心也寧靜時,那時,比丘的寧靜覺支已被發動,那時,比丘修習寧靜覺支,那時,比丘的寧靜覺支到達圓滿的修習。

當內心有喜悅的時候,身便會猗息下來,心便會猗息下來。「比丘們,當一位比丘內心有喜悅,身猗息下來,心猗息下來的時候,這位比丘就是在著手修習猗覺支。當修習猗覺支的時候,猗覺支便會逐漸修習圓滿。

當身猗息時便會有樂;有樂的人,內心便會定下來。「比丘們,當一位比丘身有由猗息所帶來的樂,心有由樂所帶來的定的時候,這位比丘就是在著手修習定覺支。當修習定覺支的時候,定覺支便會逐漸修習圓滿。

當內心有定時便會有一份高度的捨心。「比丘們,當一位比丘內心有定,有一份高度的捨心的時候,這位比丘就是在著手修習捨覺支。當修習捨覺支的時候,捨覺支便會逐漸修習圓滿。


Evaṁ bhāvitā kho, bhikkhave, cattāro satipaṭṭhānā evaṁ bahulīkatā satta sambojjhaṅge paripūrenti.

That’s how the four kinds of mindfulness meditation, when developed and cultivated, fulfill the seven awakening factors.

比丘們!當四念住這麼已修習,這麼已多修習時,使七覺支完成。

「比丘們,這就是修習四念處了。勤修這四念處,會使七覺支得到圓滿。


Kathaṁ bhāvitā ca, bhikkhave, satta bojjhaṅgā kathaṁ bahulīkatā vijjāvimuttiṁ paripūrenti?

And how are the seven awakening factors developed and cultivated so as to fulfill knowledge and freedom?

比丘們!當七覺支如何已修習、如何已多修習時,使明與解脫完成呢?

「比丘們,怎樣修習七覺支呢?為什麼勤修七覺支會使明和解脫得到圓滿呢?


Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu satisambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ.

It’s when a mendicant develops the awakening factors of mindfulness,

比丘們!這裡,比丘依止遠離、依止離貪、依止滅、捨棄的圓熟修習念覺支,⋯⋯

「比丘們,一位比丘修習能帶來遠離、無欲、息滅、放捨的念覺支,

修習能帶來遠離、無欲、息滅、放捨的猗覺支,


samādhisambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāveti ...

immersion,

修習定覺支⋯⋯(中略)

修習能帶來遠離、無欲、息滅、放捨的定覺支,


upekkhāsambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ.

and equanimity, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go.

依止遠離、依止離貪、依止滅、捨棄的圓熟修習平靜覺支。

修習能帶來遠離、無欲、息滅、放捨的捨覺支。比丘們,這就是修習七覺支了。


Evaṁ bhāvitā kho, bhikkhave, satta bojjhaṅgā evaṁ bahulīkatā vijjāvimuttiṁ paripūrentī”ti.

That’s how the seven awakening factors, when developed and cultivated, fulfill knowledge and freedom.”

比丘們!當七覺支這麼已修習、這麼已多修習時,使明與解脫完成。」

「比丘們,這就是修習七覺支了。勤修這七覺支,會使明和解脫得到圓滿。」


Idamavoca bhagavā.

That is what the Buddha said.

這就是世尊所說,

世尊說了以上的話後,


Attamanā te bhikkhū bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinandunti.

Satisfied, the mendicants approved what the Buddha said.

悅意的那些比丘歡喜世尊所說。

比丘對世尊的說話心感高興,滿懷歡喜。
